Basic Library Cataloguing for the Non-Cataloguer
You are a reference librarian and need to know more about online catalogues. You are an acquisitions librarian and have been asked to catalogue a collection of books. You are a systems librarian and you have to implement a new integrated library system. Your initial reaction is,"But I know nothing about cataloguing! I never took that course at library school." The truth is, if you understand information and information users, then it will all make sense! This 2-day workshop will provide you with an understanding of the elements and structure of catalogue records by providing you with the basics of AACR2 2002, MARC coding, Library of Congress Subject Headings, Library of Congress Classification, and Dewey Decimal Classification.
Target Audience:
If you are currently working in an information organization that catalogues to national standards but need to learn more about catalogues and catalogue records, then you should find this workshop useful. Not for the whiz-bang cataloguer, nor for the library illiterate.
Student Comments:
  • The instructor was personable and articulate
  • An enjoyable course with a good mix of overview and specific examples
  • Fabulous! Clear and interesting
  • Excellent: exceeded my expectation by far!
  • Very good instructor approachable and makes the subject "fresh"
