The Information Professional as Educator
PLC Train the Trainer Course
- Web
The technological and organizational changes affecting the workplace have increased the importance of training and staff development as an organizational imperative. As organizations expand their investment in information resources and technologies, they increasingly recognize that effective learning is a prerequisite to effective decision-making. Information professionals, with their specialized knowledge of information content, tools and processes, are well placed to play key roles as organizational learning leaders.

This seven week course will assist you in assessing the learning needs of your organization and show you how to design an effective training program, whether it be based on a delivery method that is face-to-face, e-learning, or blended learning. The course will introduce strategies for making learning for adults interactive and relevant and will also present methods for evaluating and determining the Return on Investment of your training activities.

Professional Learning Certificate in
THE INFORMATION PROFESSIONAL AS EDUCATOR

An optional certificate is available for this course. To be eligible, students must complete a final exam as well as all the weekly assignments.
Fee: $50

How the Course Works:
For instructor-led courses such as this one, an email each Monday introduces the topic for the week. Material about the topic, pointers to important sites, and short assignments are provided at the website. Students work with the lessons and then submit their assignments for discussion with the instructors and other students. Students receive individual attention from the instructors. Please allow between 3 - 8 hours each week to comfortably cover the material.

Course Requirements:
Web-based courses are modular in structure and learning builds on the lessons in the previous module. For this reason it is essential that assignments be completed in sequence and no later than one week (Sunday to Sunday) after being assigned. Students may request an extension from their instructor for medical or other valid reasons.

Computer Requirements:

  • Computer with Internet connection and a personal email account accessable from any location - home, office, internet cafe. You must also have the ability to join in chat sessions at certain points during the course.
  • Windows: Windows: XP or Vista with browsers Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher or Firefox 2.0/3.0.
Apple: Mac OS 10.3 and higher using Safari 2 or 3 or Firefox 2.0.
Target Audience:
Of value to information professionals in many settings whose roles include planning, designing and delivering instruction for colleagues and clients or those who wish to expand their professional role; includes special librarians who provide training for colleagues or knowledge workers in their organizations; public librarians who teach information literacy to members of the public; and academic librarians who provide student instruction.
Student Comments:
  • "If you ever have to do any training, take this course!"

  • "Definitely take this course! It's practical, the information is thought-provoking and this course is a must for anyone involved in planning and delivering staff training."

  • “I would recommend this course to any trainer. When one is working full-time it is nearly impossible to attend a F2F course on a schedule. I found the content very helpful and I learned a lot that will help me in my daily work. It's also a great value for a professional course.

  • "The instructor gave very detailed replies, which provided positive feedback and helped to redirect the work if it was going slightly off track. She also has a wealth of knowledge and shared extra documents (user guide, role playing models) which were of interest to particular students. Each training is so tailored to the institutions we work in."

  • "Thank you once again for providing this valuable course. Not only have I improved my presentation skills, but I think that the techniques I learned in your course have made me a more valuable member of the team here."

  • "I really enjoy this course. I am finding the readings interesting and the assignments challenging... I think I will take other courses through the PLC."

  • "I thoroughly enjoyed the class and learned a lot from it. It was immediately relevant to my work, you practice what you preach! Your comments and the other participants were very helpful."

  • "Thanks for an excellent course. Given that we're planning to do some online training, I found the course immediately useful in my work."

  • "Your facilitation was excellent, the resources and handouts very useful and you provided a great model for us to aspire to. I quite enjoyed the course, especially your feedback on the assignments and your weekly insights."
